Recorren países enteros. Sin ir a experiencias tan extremas, los niños finlandeses inician la educación formal a los siete, tienen jornadas cortas y pocas tareas. En Argentina, en los foros de crianza, es un tema que se debate cada vez más, incluso a partir de la pandemia, y genera polarización: "Yo no sé cómo hacen, me estoy volviendo loca con los chicos en casa"; o "los niños se pierden mucho de la vida social si no van a la escuela".

Por otro lado, hay mamás que empezaron a implementar una enseñanza en casa empujadas por la situación: "Mi hijo tiene cuatro años y este año supuestamente comenzaba el jardín. Debido a esto comencé a enseñarle cosas en casa y aprendió el abecedario, los días de la semana y números".

Cabe clarar que "homeschooling" no es lo mismo que "unschooling". El primero intenta reproducir una escuela, pero en casa, siguiendo los contenidos tradicionales, a la manera de cada familia. El segundo se traduce como "sin escuela" y tiene que ver con un aprendizaje orgánico basado en las necesidades de ese niño y en sus intereses, pero sin ningún tipo de aspiración a un título reconocido por el Estado.

Para los que quieren seguir la currícula se abren diferentes opciones: rendir exámenes en diciembre en el distrito más cercano. Recurrir a lo que llaman "escuelas sombrilla", escuelas internacionales que otorgan certificado o escuelas a distancia. Dentro de esta última opción, algunos títulos tienen validez a nivel internacional.

Si bien la escolarización argentina es obligatoria, un gris legal, amparado en un artículo de la Constitución que otorga la responsabilidad de la educación de los hijos a sus padres, permite hacer esta elección. Según Laura Lewin, especialista en educación, "en Argentina la legislación no lo prohíbe, pero el sistema educativo no lo alienta. Hay tantas razones para elegir el HS como familias: que el sistema educativo no es de excelencia, que los chicos sufren en la escuela. A mí me parece triste que un chico tenga miedo de ir a la escuela por el bullying, porque no se atiende su potencial, porque no se adapta a las exigencias".

Según la especialista, muchos alumnos se vieron aliviados, durante la pandemia, de ir al colegio, porque no se sienten cómodos con sus compañeros o al sistema. "Yo me pregunto si el HS le sirve a los chicos o a los padres, porque no les estamos dando la oportunidad de trabajar adaptaciones socioemocionales".

A lo que se ve en la escuela (ciencia, lengua, matemáticas), nosotros le agregamos biodanza, huerta, meditación y filosofía para niños. Algo que nos diferencia es que llegamos a los conceptos primero desde la vivencia". Esto último sigue la línea pedagógica de Emily Pikler y Montessori.

Cuando ella se remonta a los motivos que la hicieron desviarse del paradigma tradicional, algo que parece dado e incluso obligatorio, aclara: "El pedido fue de nuestras hijas cuando entraron a sala de 4 y 5". Violencia, desconexión de la maestra, bullying de los compañeros, incluso aburrimiento, eran los motivos que encontró Adriana para el malestar de las pequeñas. "Iban a una escuela privada y católica", agrega. "Terminaba la más grande primer grado y la segunda jardín. Al recibir las libretas, me empeñé en buscar alguna escuela pública o privada que mínimamente cubriera los requisitos que estaban necesitando mis hijas; no tuve suerte, no encontré nada".

En este momento recordó que una de las pedagogías que había estudiado en la universidad era 'educación en casa', que en Europa y en Estados Unidos vienen haciendo ruido.

"La pregunta que siempre me hacen es por la socialización, cosa que me hace reír un poco. Ellas llegan a una plaza y se ponen a jugar muy abiertamente con todos los chicos", comenta.

"Ellos tienen tienen primos, vecinos, van a talleres culturales, deportivos, participan de eventos, concursos literarios. Obviamente todo eso por la pandemia ha pasado a ser virtual, pero nosotros y teníamos clases en los museos, en plazas, vamos a congresos y conferencias".

Julia Izaguirre (39) vive en Marcos Paz y es docente de plástica y artista, con formaciones en Pedagogía 3000, en educación viva, y es integrante del proyecto "Awaking School". Es mamá de dos hijos de seis y diez años. Viene transitando la educación de este modo, hace cuatros atrás. Su hijo hizo dos años de jardín formal en un jardín público. Ella le llama "educación viva" a esto de que "aprender es un echo inherente a la vida".  "Muchos niños no entienden lo que se les enseña, y para qué, nosotros compartimos la vida de esta manera, y las personas adultas sabemos que cuando queremos aprender algo, lo aprendemos, buscamos información, probamos, de la misma forma aprenden ellos". 

Como otras mamás, Julia tomó esta decisión (junto con su compañero) basada en una percepción adolescente que relacionaba la escuela con una cárcel, y con un pedido de su hija de que no se sentía bien en el aula. Al mismo tiempo llegó a su taller de arte una niña que era educada en su casa y ella se dio cuenta de que eso era una posibilidad más cercana.

"La escuela está organizada, no de una manera inocente, responde al modelo industrial capitalista, y no a uno biocéntrico. NEW DELHI: Crisis-hit Credit Suisse, which is struggling to regain market confidence after its stock plunged 31% on Wednesday amid doubts over its financial stability, is the 12th largest foreign bank in India and owns assets worth Rs 20, 700 crore.

Credit Suisse Puts On A Brave Face

Even in the worst-case scenario of an SVB-like collapse, Credit Suisse is not being seen as a direct threat in India as it owns just 0.1% of assets in the Indian banking system.

However, the Swiss banking giant has a presence in the derivatives market and funds 60% of its assets from borrowings, of which 96% has a tenure of up to two months, according to a study by Jefferies.

Given the relevance of Credit Suisse to India's banking sector, analysts see softer adjustments in the assessment of counterparty risks, especially in the derivative market. "We expect RBI to keep a close watch on liquidity issues, and counterparty exposures and intervene as necessary. This may also lead to institutional deposits moving more towards larger/ quality banks, " said Jefferies analysts Prakhar Sharma and Vinayak Agarwal.

Credit Suisse To Scale Back Investment Bank Under New Chief

Credit Suisse has only one branch in India (in Mumbai). Around 70% of assets are in G-Secs (short term) and have zero non-performing loans. Like other foreign banks, its off-balance sheet is 7x the total assets.

"Borrowings in India form 73% of total liabilities and 96% of borrowings have tenure of up to 2 months. Deposit base is smaller at Rs 28 billion, forming 20% of total liabilities and 70% are from subsidiaries. While the share of shorter-term liabilities is high, assets are mostly in liquid G-Secs, " Jefferies said.

Data shows that HSBC is the largest foreign bank in India as it owns assets worth around Rs 2.47 lakh crore, followed by Standard Chartered, Deutsche Bank and JP Morgan.

However, billionaire banker Uday Kotak exuded confidence today by saying that even as the global turmoil continues in financial markets, the macro factors are turning better for India.

The stock rout in Credit Suisse has triggered a selloff in shares of German, French, Italian and UK banks. Investors are worried in India too as Nifty Bank, which has also been under selling pressure in the last few days in the wake of the SVB crisis, was trading 0.5% lower on Thursday.

The Wolves has had quite an eventful path to publication. We wanted to invite you to take a closer look at that journey with us as we share how we co-designed a game in the midst of a pandemic.

Clarence: The Tabletop Mentorship Program is a crown jewel of the tabletop design community. They run a service that matches up volunteer mentors with mentees across all different disciplines within tabletop game design. The program is open to everyone and completely free of charge. They matched me with my own mentor, Rob Newton, who helped me pitch what eventually became my first published design, Merchants of Magick.

Since then, I've served as a mentor myself many times, hopefully giving a helping hand to the next generation of designers. One of those times, I was assigned to mentor a passionate gamer who wanted to dive into game design. He had a lot of ideas, but hadn't made anything tangible yet. I was new myself and had only been designing games seriously for about six months, but if you know things that you didn't know when you started, then you can be a mentor, so I thought I might be able to help him out. Ashwin: Just being completely transparent here, with no intention of being punny, I felt like a lone wolf prior to all of this. I was/am missing home, missing family, wishing I could build something for myself. A mid-late 30s transplant in Seattle where art, music, dance and innovation at the community level is masked by not only gray skies and awful traffic congestion, but also mass transit on life support and overpriced housing everywhere you go! Struggling to find definitions in my life, I stumbled upon the Seattle Tabletop Game Designers community, a group that I once mistook for a board game meetup, but is now a group that I call family.

After being a joyous fool overly excited about everyone's projects, one person asked me a simple question, "Ashwin, where's your game?" I stopped showing my face for a few weeks. I always run away. I always do this. When adversity hits, I hit up my favorite burrito joint, play hours of Dota 2, and drown myself in box wine. This wasn't even adversity! This was just me not committing to something creative, joyful, and full of meaning that I quickly discovered about myself when I took a leap, a pounce? of faith. After overproducing a few mechanical concepts trying to show off what I found in the aisles of Michaels and Home Depot, I was guided to this Tabletop Mentorship program to sign up and be a mentee to someone who is definitely going to try to support my goals.

Beyond The Sun

Clarence and I met under these incredibly unique circumstances, where if it weren't for those series of events mentioned before that led to us meeting, The Wolves wouldn't have been made, and we wouldn't have known each other. I am eternally grateful to Clarence, firstly, but I also want to give a special shoutout to the Tabletop Mentorship Program that is hosted by the lovely Mike Belsole and Grace Kendall that led to us getting together.

All right, so after a few months in the mentorship program, I had almost nothing to show for it. I was obsessing over the game Glory to Rome and wanted to do a city rejuvination game with concepts inspired by it. I was off to a coldboywinter start as while I never knew I had it in me, I was approaching things slowly, in my head, without working nearly anything out.

Clarence started to provide some guidance: "show me", not just "tell me" type of guidance. All sorts of real conversations were had to help push it out of me, but the biggest takeaway from all of this was that it's okay to ask for help, and it's a glorious thing to have a person, like Clarence, in your corner, believing in you, and attempting to hold you accountable. It was something similar to a penpal of sorts...getting to know someone cut from the same cloth, offering to be a sherpa or just a person to talk to, and we kept in touch over the weeks/months.

Oh, I remember the day. It was raining outside. I was wearing my favorite shirt and probably shorts, with my pasta water boiling over when I got a notification buzzing sensation in my pocket. Clarence asked what games I was working on and whether we could meet about a potential co-design. Grinning from ear to ear, that moment woke me right up. That was all I needed to hear. It was a pasta primapassion for those wondering what was made that evening.

I love working with others. I love building something and solving problems with others. This had the make-up of something great from the get go. We were in high spirits, and we needed a project to really motivate us, and most of all, keep us connected. We started considering different game concepts and mechanisms to work on with seemingly endless lists of random themes. With a goal of publication in mind, we looked at current games and marketability, eventually settling on basing a game on our mutual interest in wolves.

Ashwin: Underrepresentation is a big thing for me, and not just about me being a minority, but also designing around an under-served subject matter. Shining a bright, elevated spotlight on wolves was a key driver in my desire to theme a game around them. Wolves are hunted still to this day and often characterized as vicious, villainous creatures, when they are quite the opposite. They are nomadic, territorial, and a great indicator of a thriving ecosystem. I wanted to break these harmful stereotypes, educate players about our endangered wolves, and as much as possible, make the game's mechanisms mimic what wolves are like in real life, from how they move as a pack, how they stay territorial, prowl and survey the land for what prey they typically hunt to how they make their homes near water sources.

A Board Game Auteur Makes His Next Move

We looked at types of wolves, and while there weren't many outside of a few regional species, most sources of material were describing wolves in a wolf pack led by a pair of alpha wolves. This clicked instantly with us as we could use wolves in different ways and maybe not asymmetrically. In certain regions, pack sizes are large, upwards of 20-30, but a loose definition of a wolf pack described them peaking at no larger than 8-12 wolves. How convenient. Pinch me. We're really doing this!

It came quickly to us. In mere hours after a 4:30am text from me saying, "Yo Clarence, you up?", we were penciling in major thematic mechanisms from wanting wolves to grow and strengthen their pack, evolve in the types of actions players would do, and hunt in this game while fighting for control of what is considered theirs. It was inspiring. Out of thin air, we found something we could really sink our teeth into.

Clarence: After settling on a wolf theme, we decided on some core design pillars. We wanted a competitive game that involved minimal randomness. We wanted high player agency and high interactivity. We wanted to support 3-5 players minimum. We wanted games to run no longer than 90 minutes and ideally closer to 60. We wanted the game to be about authentic, natural wolves and not some cartoony or anthropomorphized version of wolves. We wanted strong connections between theme and mechanisms.

We kept these design pillars in a shared Google Sheet that served as a sort of living design document and reference throughout the project. Occasionally, when thinking about what direction to take the design, we'd go back to these pillars to confirm that what we did would still be in service to those pillars.

It was almost too easy to pick a title for our game. Originally, we simply called it "Wolf". We were surprised that no existing games already used that title. Plus, it was one of those four-letter titles that seem so trendy these days.

To say the last week has been challenging is an understatement! As we all quickly learn to navigate challenges in our daily lives in response to COVID-19, many are also working to get courses and clients transitioned to an online platform.  With the help of my colleagues at Edinboro University, where we offer an art therapy master’s program that can be completed 100 percent online, I put this resource together to offer some advice to colleagues in other programs navigating this transition. We hope that these tips will be helpful to you.

Much like a regular classroom or session, maintaining structure, consistency and clarity are essential. Often, less is more. Predictability can be very helpful and calming – it can be beneficial at the onset to discuss the structure that you will be using as you begin class or session.

When setting up an online class, whichever platform you are using should allow you to set up material in modules. You can use these to organize material, post readings and additional resources. When assigning work, include clear instructions that includes how the assignment should be completed (format) and where it should be submitted (email; Dropbox, assignment folder). Many platforms also allow you to create online rubrics, which can make assessing the assignments more streamlined and allow students to see expectations.

What Your Therapist Doesn't Know

As students adjust, and you do too, it can be beneficial to coordinate with other faculty to strategize on assignment due dates. Having everything for all classes due on the same day often results in lower quality of work.

Making art is crucial! As art therapists, especially during times like these, it is important not to lose the art in class or sessions and for our own self-care. Be prepared with prompts to help students or clients begin the creative process. Designating the materials needed before beginning will help participants come to the session prepared. Creative Arts Therapy

As with the other topics discussed, setting up an online open studio needs to begin with setting parameters. This model is to support self-care and wellness, not to replace or take the place of group art therapy. Modeling good self-care is important, as is incorporating art making into this process.

The studio model we are using has been set up to run for two hours, at multiple times during the week. Participation has been limited to include current students and faculty in our program, with the potential to expand at a later date. Faculty are present in each session. Practicum and internship students have been asked to develop prompts to use during the open studio. This process is fluid, and we know we will need to adapt based on many factors including, but not limited to attendance, engagement and feedback.

As art therapists, we are innately creative individuals as are our students.  This time will challenge us to tap into that creativity and look for solutions to problems we didn’t envision existed. Within the art therapy community, we will be stronger for the challenges we will over come.  We are all on this journey. Now is a time for us to work together and call on each other as resources – we are stronger together than we are apart.
